Default Drag Racing / Automatic Transmission

I have been reading the thread on real fuel usage with interest especially the comments about CRD vs V8. CRDSTU proved the CRD can take off quicker than the V8 in a drag and JamesJoseph posted a 15.91 time.

I showed the post to my son who gets just under 14 secs at Willowbank in a worked Nissan 200SX and he wants me to take my '06 WH CRD to the track to test the time. I am curious as to how to get the quick lift off which was really impressive seeing the video run by jamesjoseph. Do you:

1. Just floor the pedel on the green light.
2. Brake on hard and build some revs and let go on greed.
3. Build revs in nutral and slam it into drive on green.

I don't want to wreck the vehicle just before we plan on a rather long trip.

DO NOT DO NO.3, and try both 1 and 2, somtimes building revs will work sometimes just mashing it when the light changes will work. Keep in mind though that "stalling" up the torque convertor, like option 2 creates a great amount of heat in the transmission and you shouldnt really do it for more than a few seconds.

Hi Ken, as discussed via phone today;

My advice would be to try option 1 at least 3 times to get an idea of
a) how the drag racing / staging process works
b) work out how quick you can react to the lights
c) work out how everything works at the drags, ie: how to stage, how to get the tree lit without redlighting ect.

After you've tried just flooring it off the line a few times you'll get an idea of how much turbo lag there is and what times the WH ends up doing.

After you've run 3 consistent runs I'd be looking at doing the stall brake method but be sure not to just hold the accellerator flat otherwise the computer will shut off the throttle input momentarilly as it knows not to blow the tranny. I actually feathered the throttle a bit around the 1200rpm mark as you can really feel it wants to break out.

And most of all, enjoy you're night at the drags, its pretty addictive

Thanks for the advice guys. I was planing on taking Stu's advice. I just thought I'd throw in option 3 out of curiosity. The replys are exactly what I expected. I will plan on 2 runs just flattening the pedel and a brake stall on the 3rd. I'll let you know how it goes.

There is a KJ CRD running the 1/4 ml @ 15.702 @ 92.57 mph in the USA, with the GDE Turbo Upgrade Kit and the Hemi Torque Converter plus an open exhaust. Diesels can be fast!

Note the corrected time Stu!

My mistake Stu, it was 15.7, corrected in the post above yours. There is a guy claiming 13.2 but it can't be verified. The guy doing 15.7s has it confirmed (with a G-Tech Pro Pass system - http://www.gtechpro.com/pass.html

He was running his everyday tyres, launch in fulltime 4wd with OD off.
