What oil are you using in your CRD 3.0? is there any reasonable priced synthetic oil that one can use so as to comply with the specifications, thanks.

Do a search here and you will find a post which covers all you will need, most major Oil Brands web sites have a oil recommendation guide. I use Penrite in my 2.7, reasonably priced and is a good oil.

Hi all, I should have said that my Grand has a Particulate Filter (DPF) and you can only use a special type of oil that won't stuff the filter up.
I have done some searching around and came up which seems to be a reasonable price oil it is Caltex Havoline Full Synthetic 5W 40 @ $140 for 20 ltrs, it has Mobil 1 in at the moment but it's very expensive, I think Caltex should have a good name, any comments welcome.

Default Hi Alden

Hi Alden
This oil question has been discussed at length on most Jeep forums yet many non WH/XH owners, Jeep dealers & Chrysler Aust appear confused. (The Owners Manual in my 2007 WH also listed the wrong oil type for the 3.0 !!) The answer I recd when I asked the same question of service people who should know was typically 'all oils are the same aren't they' or 'its a diesel so we use a diesel oil' !!

The WH GC & XH Commander 3.0 diesel is a Mercedes engine & is used in a range of MB (& luckily Jeep WH/XH) vehicles with diesel particle filters in the exhaust system. The oil for these engines is very specific & must match the MB229.51 5W-30 spec. exactly.

This oil is synthetic and (sadly) relatively expensive (~$140 per 10 lt from SuperCheap).
I spent a couple of hours at SCA recently & read all the oil manufacturers labels - the only oil in the entire range at SCA that matched the spec was Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w-30 (& no I don't work for Shell).

I found many oils that match the viscosity and come close to the spec (like the similar MB229.31) but these oils are not the same as the 229.51 spec. & I would not use them !!

My short (12 month) experience with the 3.0 CRD has been delightful - it is a fantastic motor, very economical and powerful when towing a load - it deserves the best.

Cheers

I believe the Penrite "Enviro Plus 5W-30" meets the MB specs of 229.51 also.
