Hi Alden
This oil question has been discussed at length on most Jeep forums yet many non WH/XH owners, Jeep dealers & Chrysler Aust appear confused. (The Owners Manual in my 2007 WH also listed the wrong oil type for the 3.0 !!) The answer I recd when I asked the same question of service people who should know was typically 'all oils are the same aren't they' or 'its a diesel so we use a diesel oil' !!
The WH GC & XH Commander 3.0 diesel is a Mercedes engine & is used in a range of MB (& luckily Jeep WH/XH) vehicles with diesel particle filters in the exhaust system. The oil for these engines is very specific & must match the
MB229.51 5W-30 spec. exactly.
This oil is synthetic and (sadly) relatively expensive (~$140 per 10 lt from SuperCheap).
I spent a couple of hours at SCA recently & read all the oil manufacturers labels - the only oil in the entire range at SCA that matched the spec was Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w-30 (& no I don't work for Shell).
I found many oils that match the viscosity and come close to the spec (like the similar MB229.31) but these oils are not the same as the 229.51 spec. & I would not use them !!
My short (12 month) experience with the 3.0 CRD has been delightful - it is a fantastic motor, very economical and powerful when towing a load - it deserves the best.
Cheers
