The trick to the old holden rocker and side plate gaskets is to glue the gasket to the cover with contact cement. You can apply some loctite 515 to the oposite side of the gasket if you want. Then be sure not to overtighten the bolts when fitting it. To tight will crush and split the gasket. Best to go back and tighten slightly more if they leak after a good run.

Thanks for that tip. Got a new gasket today so your timing is perfect.

Well for the last 5 years [since I've owned the CJ] the indicator arm has been loose. General indicator use has been frustrating and the self-canceling function has been non-existent. An added consequence has been that the arm shorts on the column casing and the horn sounds, often inappropriately as you can imagine. In what can only be described as incredibly lazy/stupid attempts to rectify this I, and the previous owner, had resorted to wedging bits of cardboard, paper, electrical tape between the casing and the arm. This invariably fails due to the material ending up inside the column and on more than one occasion has locked up the steering. Dumb. Now you need to understand that I have carried out many complex and extensive mods and upgrades, repairs, servicing etc over that 6 years but never had the common sense/inclination to fix the most annoying issue in my cj world. Today something snapped and I just had to deal with it. Pulled the steering wheel off and inside the column looked like rats had been nesting in there with all bits of chewed up paper/cardboard clogging up the indicator switch and bearing. Removed debris and cleaned up components. Issues solved in less than 30 minutes! Now why the ferk do we always leave the easiest things to fix until they drive us completely bonkers? or am I alone in that procrastination? I need to add that driving this arvo was nothing short of joyus with fully restored function. Looked forward to every lane change and corner. I also felt definite horsepower gains and that the CJ was snappier in its general response. I think fuel economy has improved three-fold and that my that ability to "get and maintain an erection" may 'stretch' into next week with any luck. It's the simple things in life that make the biggest difference
