Picked up all the little bits and pieces to do the sye conversion. got a new intermadiate tap that will cover making a new thread and also allow to go deep for the blind hole. Got new drill bits.
Got the crossmember off this arvo, cut it down, added some stiffeners and got 90% of it welded. Tomorrow will finish that and do the drive shaft. Worked out between taking out the transfer case drop and the mod to the crossmember it a 2" gain in clearance

Just finished packing the old boat up. Heading out to Noojee for the long weekend. The weather is going to be shite, there will be lots of mud and beer or 11. Should get some good pics.

SYE installation next weekend.... Can't wait looks like fun.
Any one got a spare front shaft for sale for an XJ?

Otherwise I'll just ring Wooders. Need a front bar and rear bar anyway...

What drills did you get? I use cobalt drill bits for this job, it also helps to have the output shaft spinning to help keep the hole centred but as your dilling into a moving object I would have someone standing by to shut off the engine just in case something goes wrong.
One last thing don't make the typical rookie mistake and use too high a speed on the drills, as you go larger in diameter reduce the speed or you will cook the bits.
Also use cutting compound on the tap.
When I do mine (maybe today) I am not using the supplied attaching bolt as I am going to be using M10 as I have a brand new taper and bottom tap just itching to cut into the output shaft.....

Did you measure the length to work out if you need to cut the shaft back at all?

Let us know how you go as you may be the first of the buch to do this from this batch (I have done one previously)....

I'm using the supplies bolt, just got a new 3/8 tap and HHS drill bit and 3/16 pilot. I have spares for these as well, but wanted new ones for this job. I have a couple of different types or cutting compunds which I use for drilling just about anything in steel nowdays. Saves the drillbits/holesaws and makes the job so much easier. Also have the cutting compound for the new thread. I ended up getting an intermediate tap that will cover having to have a taper and intermediate. Told the salesman what I was drilling into and he came back with some specific bits. Was only 20 bucks for the tap and 2 bits. I will have the shaft turning for the pilot hole to make sure it's centered.
I will finish the crossmember this morning. remount it, take of the old driveshaft, measure again to see what I need to cut and go from there. I already have shims for the alignment. Also need to finish replacing the uni joints in the new 2nd hand driveshaft. Looks like I'll gain about 50mm extra clearance from the crossmember mod and taking out the drop.
