The reason it could have locked up is the pads may be down to the metal and this is the sound your hearing. Check the pads, This would be the first thing to check. Jack the wheel up and turn it and listen where the noise is. Use a long screwdriver and put the handle to your ear and poke around with the other end and check around the uni joint and bearing. you could use a length of garden hose and use it like a stethoscope

Check that there is no air in the brake system. When the caliper heats up, any air in the caliper will expand and push the pads against the rotors.

It sounds like you might have a problem with your front wheel bearings. Jack the front of the XJ up, leave the wheel on, grab the tyre at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and try and rock the wheel back and forth. There should be no movement - if there is, it is likely that your wheel bearings are worn, allowing play in the hub.

Worn bearings will tend to "growl" which sounds like the noise you can hear. You can also test them by driving down a straight stretch of road, and turning the wheel left to right so you make a snake movement down the road. This will load and unload the bearings on each side of the XJ so as you load the side you think has an issue, the noise should get louder.

other things to look for in addition: a bent brake dust shield contacting the rotor (usually at the bottom) or a rock stuck between the rotor and the dust shield or a rock caught/embedded in the brake pad itself (pull the caliper off the knuckle to check this). could also be the brake piston isnt retracting allowing the pads to firmly contact the rotor all the time (spin the tire and check it against the other side for consistency - you should get at least a couple of free revolutions)
