To me it seems to be a U joint issue ( cap retention ) not an axle issue.
Looking at the effect of the failure not its cause is not going to solve it.
30's and 44's both use the same U joint cap retention method and BOTH fail.
Its pretty obvious that when the caps come adrift then chaos is bound to ensue on a 30 or 44. This can and does happen under a wide variety of driving conditions - but seems somewhat related to shock loads.
Bill ( DBOR ) has a splendid collection of 30 axles with the same damage all occuring before he retined the caps - not one failure afterward.
Have a search and you'll see the web is full of details on the issue, mostly with 30's... but there are more of them out there so that's what you'd expect.

Spot on Mighty mouse, I had failures on my 35s cause of these uni caps and did about 25 odd trips on 37s before upgrading to the RCVs.
Yours have been ordered, just waiting for Steve to sort it man.
Ok, well this begs the question then, what is the best / easiest way to retain the stock caps? Its dark and raining outside so I cant go and have a look at how they are setup at the moment!
