guys, a bit off topic, but with the expected cost of head replacement/repairs, has anyone considered replacing the donk with a merc or vw unit? i know its big bucks, but with the vw transpoerters we use as ambulances, one of those motors would be nuts in an xj- loaded theyre over 2t and cruise in 6th all day from anywhere 90-170+ and economical as too! big money i would assume, but it would indeed be awesome!

Digging up an old thread a little... but...
Turbo rebuild was successful, now running beautifully in the XJ.
The kit from Japan was really good, instructions quite good and easy to follow.

What are the symptoms?

I have been pulling my hair out trying to find an air leak in my hoses & the turbo itself, even tried spraying WD40 & then gas around the hoses & turbo to try & find a leak by hearing for an increase in rev's (never done this before, unsure if there is a technique?) all to no avail.

The symptoms I have is that during hard acceleration I get no BRRRRRRRRR at all, but under gentle acceleration the BRRRRRRRRR kicks in.

I hear the elbow pipe can get a split in it on the XJ turbo diesels, might explain why it doesn't happen under light acceleration there's bound to be threads relating to that issue if you search through the forum
