Default knocking/tapping sound when slowing down

hi guys,

Did a quick search but had no luck.

XJ cherokee 95 . When slowing down I can hear a tapping/knocking sound from the front drivers side. The knocking slows down to a halt as i slow down to a stop then as i accelerate again it starts till i cant hear it again when driving.

I seem to be hearing it more often now and possibly getting worse. Seems to be worse when car is warm and been driving around for a bit.

I also did a search on google and found on cherokeetalk.com something similar and they suggest u joint on its way out

http://www.cherokeetalk.com/forum/f2...nt-wheel-7958/

Any thoughts before i take it to the mechanic would be appreciated.

cheers

Yep, uni in the axle, mine did the same and after a quick check the uni was stuffed. I've since replaced both sides and another noise is now gone

Cheers
Steve

I had that exact uni' replaced only 2 weeks ago.
If you jack up the front & pull the wheel off you'll soon enough be able to check it out for youself. If it's knackered you'll feel play in the uni', there should be no movement in it at all.

Worst case senario, Uni fails, which takes out the axle ears (need new axles), which then binds in the small space it is in (wheel stops turning), and finally binding/jamming causes 1 or both steering knuckle ball joints to come apart (need new ball joints), you can fill in the rest of what happens (loss of steering/wheel falls over). That would be Worst case senario if you were unlucky. I just brought some 760X joints from Just Diffs in the US (He is a vendor on here), but you can get them from Wooders (also a note worthy vendor) or most bearing shops (like CBC) should be able to get them for you.
