I've called the local dealership a few times for quotes on parts, one of them the rep and I were having a laugh at the $3800 quoted on a replacement steering box. He had me try and guess the price, kept saying "higher...", "higher..."

But I agree with Rodge, if you find a mechanic who does a good job with your car then its worth hanging onto them. I'm doing more and more of my work myself out of necessity as much as a desire to learn since I've been to 5 mechanics in the last few years and still havent found one I'm happy with.

Everything I am confident to do myself I do.
Otherwise I will only take it to someone thats been recomended for that specific job on a Jeep

Im in Vic, so we have poly 4x4 they can and will do most things, Ive found them pretty good if you've got jeep problems they usually got answers.

I have a 2001 XJ Sport...I will do most of the servicing myself... I get satisfation of doing it myself.. also I learn a bit along the way..not to mention the $$$ that stay in my pocket. There may be a time when it needs more specialised servicing..so if you find a reputable/honset mechanic to do the bigger jobs, well that fine also ... happy to spend some funds on proper/correct servicing that are out of my knowledge/capabilities.
