Drill a hole at the end, clean it all up and weld it.
Then plate over the wop and weld that too.

I've only had it for 4 months and its past history is unknown to me though I'm led to believe that it's had a hard life...

Is this the kind of thing panel beater/smash repairer could do? Because I've never held a welder in my life...

Yes !! Make sure they know what they are doing. Welding is always a worry to the electronics. A bad weld will just cause more cracking.

How so? I understand a bad weld would mask a structural defect and permit it to continue tearing the metal but not that it caused increased damage per se?

If the area is not prepared properly, or the wrong welding rod/wire used. You could end up with the heat effected zone as brittle as a carrot.
Structural welding like this should only be attempted by a certified welder & a certificate obtained as to the structural integrity of the repair.

Fitted a long awaited 678 tranny cooler. Mounted it on the hot side of the rad so that the elec fan can draw some air through it when I flick the switch. Fitted the temp gauge sender in a T piece at the same time.
