Default Overlander 4WD magazine - Jeep Diesel v Petrol

Just picked up a copy of Overlander 4WD magazine (Oct issue) because of an article they have on the 2.8l Diesel versus the 3.7l petrol. Both tested in a Jeep Limited Wrangler

Diesel in the 2011 Wrangler limited 5sp Auto
Petrol in the 2011 Wtangler limited 6sp manual

Tested just south of Taarook, on the fringe of the Victorian High Country.

I've been debating about getting a Diesel or Petrol Cherokee. The answer to my own query was that diesel in Tas is $1.52 v unleaded at $1.44 ltr.

On the magazines figures I would need to travel 650,000 km for the lower fuel consumption of the diesel to negate the 'extra' purchase price. Their advice is that the diesel's only value is in it's overall driveability, refinement of the diesel engine and range extending ability (Diesel goes 90k further on a 85l tank)

An interesting article and poss worth investing $9.95 for the magazine?
Cheers, Pete

Haven't read the article but the figures seem a bit out. 3.7l petrol loves to drink fuel and rarely betters 14.5l per hundred km so factor in about 450km out of the tank. Diesel is more like 9l per hundred km so you'd expect 800km out of a tank. Start loading up or towing and the figures will get even further apart.

thats more what i was thinking, but could be wrong.

with those fuel prices should be more like this.

diesel
10l/100 = $15.2/100km

ULP
14.5/100 = $20.88/100km

difference of $5.68/100kms

so diesel option @ 4k option to me should pay for it self in 70,422kms,

might be worth someone checking my maths, that's not taking into account servicing or anything.

Seems a little bit odd to me (well a lot odd actually). As others have said, I can't see how the petrol could get 650km on a tank given the fuel consumption that everyone says they get but I regularly get 700km out of a tank and the new 2011 models get better fuel consumption than mine.

Haven't read the article but I'm assuming that they aren't allowing for the proportionally higher resale value on the diesel which negates a good portion of the extra cost in the first place.

What is the service cost difference between the two, are the diesels more expensive?
