Default Sqeaking Pulleys frighten mechanic

Hi Guys.....just a short note to say that one of my pulleys has developed a nasty squeak - turned out to be the lower larger one which has a spring which failed and hence the serpentine belt was moving.

Anyhow my mechanic got the fright of his life when he was quoted $1200 to replace the set of 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I managed to track a second hand set down for $350 but wondered how on earth can Jeep charge so much for such a universal type product???

I know we have a thread on generic/cheaper parts but couldnt find one for the pulleys/idler tensioner thingys.

Any bright ideas - might buy a set just in case the second hand ones fail.

Default Pulleys

I seem to recall someone on this forum saying that the pulleys off a 2000 Pajero were the same...I might be wrong, but worth a look.

Of course it will depend on which engine you're talking about.

Another thought, why not ask glend who is a regular poster on here and a very helpful guy.

Buy them from the US over the net - I got a glow plug set for $180 instead of $1200.

Steve White Motors http://www.stevewhitemotors.com/ is a dealership in the US. IOC you call them early in the morning you could probably get them to express something over - although they had listed the Glow Plugs on eBay when I bought them.

Because they do, because they can, and because the majority of Jeep owners just grumble and pay up.

If you are talking about the 3.7 petrol then Morris 4x4 or MoparOnlineParts are the places to go. If you want CRD engine parts you should try George at VM Specialists in the UK. All these have been used in the past by AJOR members with good results.

I know someone who bought idler pulleys for their CRD serpentine belt for $20 and they are made in Wagga. I think the part number was the same as an Audi part (EP101 from memory). As Pipes says, they get away with it because they can.

The Chrysler Voyager also uses the 2.5 and 2.8CRD motor and the belt that fits my 2.5 also fits the 2003 Voyager 2.5. Dunno about the pulleys tho'..

Check the 2003 model, not the earlier ones with the 2.5tdi.
