All sorted thanks to help from JJ and bit of the Net and some experimentation. I think JJ was right about it being a ground loop issue? I solved it but earthing the outer sheild of the RCA lead to the head unit. I used about 5" of wire and wound it round the lead and back onto the deck. I am thinking the head unit may have a problem with its RCA jacks. When I get the new head unit in a few weeks I should know for sure.
I am now wondering if that was the problem with my old amp
and not some internal fault. Amp is probably gone by now as I left it with the repairman over a week ago after I took it back a fourth time.
