Ahhh...brings back memories. About 15 yrs ago we went on a trip in a L/R Defender out to Bourke with the intention of heading to Camerons Corner. I wasn't that worried about the weather as there had been a drought out there for about 5yrs. Wrong, started to rain as we reached Bourke and the local copper said the road is closed, so we opted to go to Wilcannia via the Darling river flood plain. Wrong, they don't call it a flood plain for nothing. Started to bucket down as we went through Louth and as it was only about 8pm we decided to push on and camp down the track a bit. Wrong, black as pitch, crawling along in 2nd gear, headlights covered in mud, water on the ground everywhere and nowhere to camp, deep water over the road for 100's of metres, navigate by watching the guide posts, travelled a lot of the way with the front wheels on the track and the back wheels sliding in the gutter, reached Wilcannia as it was getting light. Wave after wave of heavy rain came through as we were resting. Decided the rest of the track would be like this and we couldn't afford the time to sit around so we abandoned or trip.
So the advice is...check the weather and don't travel that track if it looks like rain.
And.. don't camp anywhere near Wilcannia as they warned us its not a very nice place (thugs). Take a shanghai, it may be useful. My father inlaw was in that area filling with fuel when a gang of kids started to pull his trailer to pieces. He would chase one lot off from one end of the trailer while the second lot attacked the other end. Chased the second lot off the first lot returned.
Don't get me wrong, on a fine day you'll have a good trip.
