each time you place a foot on the ground or purposely stop and lean on a tree or rock you get a point up to a max of 3 points per section. If you stall it, can't complete the section or step off the bike you get a 5. It might sound a bit strange but it works well. In a trial earlier this year, i only dropped 7 points for 5 hours of riding but i still came 5th place, where on a harder trial the end of last year i dropped 35 points and came 1st place - the difficulty of the terrain and weather conditions really determine how many points the entire field of riders will get for the day.
Itchy, i don't know about 4x4 tracks but as you can see, you don't really need a huge area of land to hold a moto trial comp, sections are usually only a max of 40 metres long and you only need 10-15 of them to have a trial. I have about 12 fully setup and taped out comp spec sections in my backyard for my mates to bring their bikes over and practice on weekends off between comps.
cheers
