Default Gear Pattern check! 4.88 install HP dana 30.

hey guys any opinions on this gear pattern, HP dana 30 from an XJ. Its my first effort before I finished up for the day, no pinion shims except for the oil baffle (same as when I disassembled the old R&P) and backlash is at 6thou. Only managed to get a pic of the drive side but the coast pattern is closer to the heel of the gear. Any feedback would be muchly appreciated

Cheers for the input mate. I reassembled the pinion as it came out, and there are no inner shims except the funny little inner oil baffle, so I cant bring the pinion out any further.. I havent touched it for a few days though cos im waiting for some things to arrive. When they do ill go have another look at it

Makes sense. The inner slinger does seem pretty thick. Well i PM'd you the latest patterns. The new bearings were slightly thinner than the old setup bearings so it made a small difference. Thanks again for the help mate!

Its a little hard too see in pic but looks to me like it could go a little more to the heel of the crown which means moving crown to increase backlash. As for pinion depth , it looks pretty good although maybe could go just a tad deeper into mesh ie closer to the root of the tooth.
Theres a ryme for getting it right "toe & heel move the wheel , face & flank move the crank".
If its a 2nd hand gearset make sure to match the old pattern weather it was right or not, also pattern is much more important than backlash.

hi you have a toey reading now that is good because as soon as the load comes on it will move to the heel you will not be able to load up the gear set as the engine and wheels will so it will be fine back lash can be any where from 6 to 14 thou preload you shoodbe able to turn it with a slite drag not to tight as to burn out the bearings or to loose to let the set up patten to cange you are doing fine good luck
