Greasing the slip yoke ONLY applies to the "dry yoke" style found in '96 models onwards which look like this, minus the tail shaft obviouslt...

The "wet yoke" style you do NOT grease as they are lubricated by the fluid inside the t/case, they look like this, again minus the tail shaft...

Just for interests sake a slip yoke eliminator or SYE looks like this when installed on a "wet yoke" t/case.

Or the strengthened version (not commercially available) looks like this, again a wet yoke t/case...

Cheers, JJ

Hi BM welcome to the world of XJ's. Re your compressor cycling it should stay on for a bit more than a few seconds, more like 25-30. If not get that sussed as the gas could be low on pressure. I had that trouble about 2 year ago.

The other thing is yerr the clutch fans seem to be common like others have already said. Search on here for viscous fans and plenty of people will tell stories of chasing an over heating prob and the issue was the fan.
Accorrding to the FSM that if they are stored lying down that it stuffs them up. I reckon if a previous owner did not know that and say did the water pump and left the fan horizontal overnight then that may cause the grease and slicone to mix. It would be worth getting a mech or someone in the know to check the fan. All it is, is getting the under bonnet temp nice and hot so that it causes the fan to lock up and engage as it should. Takes about 1 min of time once the fan engages fully as it should or not what ever the case may be.

Regards A

Ok so I have changed the thermostat, fan clutch and new coolant (plus thermostat housing after I cracked it) and its running a little cooler. Sits on and around 100 on the dash so I'm thinking that may be normal for this car???

Thanks for all your help

Thermostat isn't fully open til 92 and thermofan kicks in at 105 and off at 95 so that's right on the money
