Default WJ gearbox warning

so our 2001 WJ 4.7ltr with 145,000 on the clock was having a issue in the gearbox.
at around 90kms it would bounce up and down 200-300 rpm every now and then, so i got a filter kit put through it and all good for around a month.

then a month later when trying to reverse it was slipping in and out of gear so out it came to find out the oil pump springs had shit themselves in turn no oil was pumping to reverse gear and over drive hense the rpms at 90kms.

spoke with a gearbox builder that used to build my gearboxs for my race car and he said this was a common fault with that box.

so i spent $4000 to re build it, sounds dear but the reverse gear is now a five clutch pack and not three clutch, i had a stage two shift kit put in it and the stall converter custom made to a two grand stall.

the oil pump was also replaced with an after market item that has a better reputation.
the stall works well off road, when crawling stop foot bounce on the throttle and still plenty of power over that 2000 rpm when needed....

Scott_XJ, I haven't heard of that fault before. Which box was it, the 45RFE or 545RFE. Were there any other symptons?

I had a fluctuation of 200-300 rpm in mine but after a throttle body clean it was gone.

no thats all it did to start out with and then started to shudder in reverse, its going back at the moment becouse the tool of a machanic who put the box back in didnt fill it properly.

drove it home and then down the street about 10km and this filthy burning rubber smell appeared......

so i went back there and he said it needed a top up, well i caught the sneaky peice of shit putting 2ltrs of fluid in it...

making him get the box pulled out and sent back to the builder for a check over at his cost

Been there before with gearbox guys sent my car back to Melbourne on a truck rather that get someone up here on the Goldy to mess it up again
Admittedly it was a Citroen gearbox and all the guys up here said 4 grand no warranty the guys in Melbourne did it for $4500 with 3 year warranty and it went back under warranty 3 times before I sold it the new owners will probably never have a problem LOL
