Not really a bad design, it is no different to most other vehicles, it is usually just age or lack of maintenance that leads to this more then the design...

Could be worse, could be a Range Rover then you'd be looking at $3000-4000 as they have a fan that fails, I have seen brand new heater cores for sale for under $200 and the dash isn't hard to remove (pre-updates anyway), just time consuming.....
