Default Xj transnision grinding in reverse

Has any body had a problem with auto trans grinding noise in reverse under heavy load. I was breifly boged in sand and selected reverse when it made the noise

check your transmission mount, if it is sagged/worn/collapsed the t/case will rub on the cross member in reverse and make that kind of noise.

Mine did the same thing 1 week after I got it and got worst over a couple of days. It was the trans mount. When I replaced it I thought I missdiagnosed as it looked ok. I guess it just got soft and sagged.
Try and get under there with a pry bar and leaver against it so see how much movement you get.

did you figure out the problem... mine is doing it. I noticed when rev a trailer up a hill. ill be checking my tranz mount first.

Check your motor mounts. Mine Didnt do it in reverse but under heavy load the engine would shift and my clutch fan was hitting on an aircon line. Found the pasanger side mount was shagged from the heat of the exhaust manifold. Top of all the fan blades were shiney giving it away. Good luck.
