Default transfer case adaptions

Gidday Crew,
I'm doing a little homework on a subject I know little about,

Dana Spicer 18 transfer cases- what readily available manual gearboxes or auto's can be bolted up to them with the least amount of hassles/ best reliability?
A gearbox [or auto] with overdrive ratios would be prefered as the axles ratios I have are stump pulling 5.38's

Sooner or later I intend to dump the peugeot diesel engine and box from my CJ340 mahindra-[license built CJ3B] and replace it with something that is a bit more respectable.

Whatever gearbox or auto that fits best will dictate the engine type.

I'm not chasing huge increases of horsepower- more after reliability and easy servicing and parts when needed, although a few extra ponies would be welcome.........

any advice appreciated

stephen

If you don't want hassles, just put an overdrive on the original transfer case and turbo the Peugeot. Herm the overdrive guy in the US is your man for the overdrive.

I have found that Herm makes the specific overdrive to suit the mahindra transfercase cogs, at a cost of around a grand.

Advance adaptors also do an upgrade kit to replace the intermediate shaft and its needle bearings in the transfercase, with tapered bearings, which is good to know if the bearing surfaces inside the cogs are worn.

I dont know what the kit is worth yet- but handy to know its out there.
The way my luck runs- I will need the kit.

My main reason for looking for an alternative engine and gearbox, is that the original peugeot 2.1litre diesel is,
a- gutless,
b- part supply is awkward,
c- with the agricultural gearing they rev too high/ dont last too long.

I figured that with something like an early[ish] 3.8l V6 and transmission with built in overdrive, I might be able to solve all the problems in one hit.

In my pile of parts, I have the remains of a jeep Dana 18, and a mahindra D18, both good for using as a template for matching up to gearboxes or adaptors.
I am not sure what cogs they have- as both were completely dissassembled and mixed up when I got them- and some cogs are short of teeth.

In a mates workshop there is also a later model transfer case, iirc its a divorced set up- needing a short driveshaft or donut to connect to the gear box, but I think it would then not line up well with the CJ differential pinions.

Stephen.
