If your regulator is shot. The cheapest exchange (You really don't want to buy an new ECU!) is to put an regulator directly behind your alternator.
But we don't know the model, so it is guessing again.
All the petrol xj's here use the ecu as the regulator irrespective if it is an update or a pre-update. .......

1996 update. Has obd2. Replaced aultenator. Fitted a lager one from a zj grand. All fixed. I'm only putting what I had happen up because when I googled the fault they all said O2 sensors. Tho this was not my fault.
