Default time to give up!

hey Ive had my xj for around 8 months and in that time i have probably filled it up 5 times so in other words it hardly gets driven.
but every time i do drive i notice something else wrong with it that needs to be fixed or re done as the previous owner has done a dodgy

the list of things to do just keeps growing and im starting to get over it!

i love the xj it is amazing offroad and i like the size and look of them aswell however i cant help but feel nervous everytime i have to take it out.

so my question is do i just have a dud? should i look at buying an update and spending a bit more to hopefully get one that has more things that work then dont or is there no such thing as a reliable xj that you can just jump in and drive weather its to the shops or to some remote location out in the bush.

or dare i say it should i part it out and cross back over to the darkside (patrol)

any thoughts would be appreciated.

cheers

It's a bit rough to call a 15-20 odd year old, several owner 4wd a dud.

I would wager that if you drove the vehicle more often you would probably have sorted out the issues it has already and have a pretty reliable vehicle.

I've had mine a similar length of time and drive it everyday probably 350km a week. Ironed out the kinks over the first month or so and it goes great. Except for the pinhole I found in the high pressure p/s hose today. But that's just part of owning a 20 year old Jeep.

i understand the cars age i also have a 1969 hk premier so i get that older cars will need more attention. that is a resonable point i have put some things off as i dont need to drive the car every day but this will change soon and it will become my daily driver. the reason i call it a dud is that i see and read of people using them daily with out issues but mine cant seem to handle a fortnightly trip to the dump.

thanks for your reply

Well mine is a daily driver and apart from a couple of minor squeaks/rattles it is reliable and dependable....

What is actually wrong with the jeep?

If i were you i'd look at it like this;

How much will the parts cost to fix your jeep? How long will it take you to put said parts on your jeep? How much is your time worth.

Cost of parts + (How long it will take you * how much you make an hour) = How much is needed to fix your jeep.

If that number is higher/even with how much you could sell your current jeep for plus the amount calculated above it is almost worth it to buy another jeep.

Yeah, I sold my zj about 4 months ago for the same reason. I was always fixing something, and like your saying it got to the point where it felt like something failed every second time out. (not even offroad) I had $1000 in spares I couldnt afford to have fitted, (zero mechanical ability), and list of things to do that was $4- 5 k long.
I sold it and have yet to replace it, (I will tho). Like the others have said theyre getting on and I guess their are duds of all types in second hand car market. I have decided to buy a built version next time, spend more on the initial purchase and hopefully find one that been cared for by someone who loves it.
Good luck with your decision.

I feel your pain brother, I suspect I have had more shit go wrong with my Jeep than anyone on AJOR in the last 5 years. Anything and almost every potential common and not so common job I have had to repair on my XJ. Only common issue I have not experienced yet is a major sensor failure. But my 98 XJ has been on the flat bed a few times now for other probs that couldn't be fixed on the side of the road.

Regards A
