Your seems like a pssoibilty but I'm thinking if the code means I need a new CAT then getting a new OEM Cat + an aftermarket exhaust will probably work out really expensive. Do you have to get annual cehcks done for your rego in QLD? I'm wondering if taking out the DPF would result in failing the emissions check they do.

No there's no annual safety checks here in Banana Land. The job they did on my exhaust replacement was very neat, I asked them to keep the new exhaust system high so it would hit any rocks etc. There's no dents or scraps on it after 6 months.
The 2 pressure pipes for the DFP are disconnected and are tucked up and cable tied off but you could always get 2 holes drilled into the new exhaust with the mounting nut welded in place so it looks like the pipes are doing something. This would fool the inspectors.
I could have got a high flow cat for about another $400 but the mechanic was having trouble getting up into the tight location to undo the old one.
