Sorry for sounding so negative but I would think twice about fitting an exploder rear end to your XJ, they may have disc brakes which is a great improvement over the crappy drum brakes but they are just not wide enough to put under an XJ which is a bad thing unless you like having different offset wheels front & back
I run an 8.8 and have no problems with wheel offset... ???

It has been one of the best mods I have done to my XJ.

cheers

Depending on which model you get they can be up to 4" shorter than the XJ's Dana 35, the widest & latest model ones are a inch narrower

Which is why you would source a later one.

So spring under has a worse ride quality?? Ever driven in an all leaf S/O Hilux???

many vehicles for many years used spring under to use a thinner spring while keeping axle wrap under control. (not perfect, if you had a high hp engine you would need the traction bar still as written belo).

yes you will have to find some longer archier springs, mix and match at the local wrecker with a tape measure.

springs will hang lower to ground, one of the tradeoffs...

Well there ya go, I never knew that... I realised mine was 5/8 narrower either side, which is barely noticeable. Except for the fact the XJ has now got a tighter turning circle. Haven't noticed a difference in handling.
Wheels are fine. Did we get the narrower diffed models here?

I personally wouldn't consider a narrower diff for the rear especially if it's 1" narrower as it will cause issues with wider tyres unless you use a different offset rim and then if you use this same offset on the front they'll stick out further then the rears which leads to more problems.
31's on stock offset rims fit inside the flares just on the rear but rub on the inside wheel wells on a stock diff, this would be considerably worse with a narrower diff....
