Just to give you another guage, I run 17 x 8 / 4.75bs rims fitted with 285 / 70 R17 tyres on a 2" lift and standard guards.
After fine tuning of the panhards, to center the axles, I can still get the tyres to touch in extreme situations and they rate a "hmmm" from the police as it is a bit touch and go with the protrusion.

I run same setup as wazzaD with factory mudguards.... Looks very very borderline, looks legal from one side... Kinda not legal from other... But widens your wheel track by more than 50mm (54 to be exact) and your insurance company won't like you ....

Thanks for the pics and feedback guys. Thisisadu, i see what u mean. 5" prob wont be enough to fix. So 285s and 5" would be just fine regarding track and protrusion. This is what ive been asking myself today. Maybe easier with 285s.
What shits me is near my place and nearer to cop shop theres a mechanic and theres heaps of 4wd. They all landys n patrols lifted so high theyd fall over if u push the roof. A few have got wheels hanging out a few have got those rubber strips over the tyres. Are jeep drivers overthinking things? Ie being sensible.
Well i might give 315s a go (and hope never to have a major accident) and try those rubber things (pacer flexy i believe) and if im rubbing heaps just go 285. Doesnt seem hard to sell 315s.

I would say anyone would appear to be over thinker when compared to your average flannel shirt wearing, JB & coke drinking Landy/Pootrol owner.
