Default 2.7 CRD transfer case chain slapping?

Sorry it's been a while since I've been on...it's our busy season. My company rents jeeps and other vehicles as well as gives tours in Kyrgyzstan. Needless to say they get a lot of abuse. We've got two GCs, both 2004 2.7 CRDs, one Laredo with Quadra-Trac and one Overland with Quadra-Drive. The Laredo has started to develop at humming or light grinding noise under acceleration and particularly when using the engine to slow down once you're over 80 km/h. Today we took it to a shop and put it up on the lift. If you run start the wheels turning when up on the lift there is a terrible racket from the transfer case. It sounds like the chain is contacting the outside of the case. This raises a couple of questions, especially since the jeep has only 127,000 km on it.

1. Is this a common problem? and is the chain usually the culprit?
2. If it is the chain what are the replacement options? Is the same chain used in anything else? Can a chain be made from other parts, at least for a while?
3. Any suggestions on substitute oil to refill the t-case? I know that Mobil 424 works, any other suggestions that might be available in the Russian speaking world?

I've got to have this going by the 10th for a client. At this point ordering the chain from Europe isn't going to happen, deliver takes a minimum of 2 weeks. I've got a line on a used t-case from a 4.7. Maybe swap the parts? Also if anyone knows of a Jeep parts supplier in Almaty that would be another option.

The chain can stretch however if the car isn't abused and is standard car I wouldn't think this is a common problem at all. The chain is cheap to buy around $100 from the US depending in shipping costs. You can split the transfer case on the car and replace any of the worn parts pretty easily.

This mob are good to buy a kit from http://cobratransmission.com

Also call Wooders Garage they may have the chain in stock.

The CRD does have a different input bearing which can be a challenge to source, but I have a thread on here with some info on that if needed. All other parts are easily sourced from a good bearing shop.

It may also be something other than the chain, I've seen some youtube video where a selector can create some of these noises too.
