I did mine recently myself. A few points, everthing needs to be dismantled and painted seperately including all hinges, bolts ,vents, etc. Make sure to get any rust or cracks repaired properly first. Use thin rubber or plastic gaskets under all hinges. I originally used non acetic silicone sealer but its a pain if you need to remove or reposition anything. I used thick black plastic sheet, builders underlay I think on the tailgate hinges and cut up an old car inner tube for the bonnet hinges. I think the inner tube rubber is best because it works as a seal and prevents water getting in causing rust.

I got a couple of ball park 6k quotes for a CJ8. It's so difficult to judge without seeing the condition of the body and even then it is difficult to tell what's underneath the paint prior to stripping. Another big factor is what you are going to present them with to work on? I will be removing every hinge, glass, door furniture and motor will be out with tub loose bolted to a rolling chassis and then reassembling myself. That alone will generate big savings.

As expensive as this sounds it's not the work you are having done that costs it's the work that they could and would prefer to be doing instead, i.e. single panel and bumper repairs that they can rip through quickly and hit insurance companies for.

Thanks for the updates.

I got another quote for around 5k from a shop who were going to chemically strip the paint back to bare metal and repair/weld a few sections before painting.

I will be doing an engine swap so I may look at doing the paint at the same time. That way the guards and bonnet will be removed which will help with the process.

I was thinking of putting a liner inside the tub but now thinking it looks better all painted the same colour.

For the liner look at a product called Erki Tex. Its a textured paint used for the sills on cars and is about $15/L and took 3L to do my CJ7. Sticks like crazy, looks good and can be tinted any colour.
