Hey guys,

I broke my steering box this weekend while on the tracks so I have been a bit preoccupied with trying to get that fixed up without bankrupting myself.

I got a long run out of the Jeep before snapping my steering though.
outside temp was 23c
intake at 56c
water was at 84c
trans was at 78c

All sitting happy and steady but without AC on

met the group and drove in convoy up some decent hills, this meant more varied speeds causing the TC to unlock frequently

trans temp reached 88c, and then the water temp started to rise quickly, I think to around 100c (the outside temperature had increased a bit by this point though)

I think the stock JK CRD auto cooler is ok when the trans isnt working hard, but once the trans gets hot the trans cooler doesn't have the capacity to bring the temp back down quickly enough this means all the heat from the trans cooler gets pushed through the radiator and up goes the water temp

if we can keep the trans below 84c no matter what then at least it wont be sending air hotter than that to the radiator and the jeep should be able to self regulate

I think the cooling system on the jeep struggles to regulate itself once there is that much heat build up If the trans temp can be kept within tolerance then I think the stock radiator and fan will cope fine

I am going to try a full dismantle and clean of all the cooling panels up front, then I will try the PML pan (as I think it will disperse heat from under the jeep, away from the radiator which will be highly beneficial)
hopefully this will keep my trans running between 71c and 82c (160f-180f)

If it's still running hot I will put a thin trans cooler up the front, I really don't fancy the rear diff position for a cooler

Have you checked the viscous fan is actually working? I'm guessing mine was stuffed for over a year and that includes towing the Jayco to Kalbarri and Pemberton!

yeah mate, both fans spinning powerfully
i'm fairly sure a dismantle and clean will fix a lot of the heat issues

I am wondering though, I have the dbor flares, and have removed the wheel arch linings. Maybe without the linings, the fan doesn't 'suck' air through the panels quite as much, maybe it pulls in air from the wheel arches?

I had a problem with my 2009 JK CRD auto overheating on and off for a few months. Had it pressure checked and it came back all good. It over heated again and was loosing fluid from unknown location. Got a new radiator cap. City driving in 40C with the air con on and the temp sits just below half no worries. Sometimes it the simple things. Face palm!

Bringing this up again as summer is on the way....

Has anyone managed to make any changes to prep the CRD Autos for the summer heat?
