I was camped up at Bretti Reserve, above Gloucester NSW, with a bunch of astronomy people (its a well regarded dark site). Cows
are allowed to graze on the reserve and the local farmers move the herds back and forth across the river to various paddocks nearby. There was a group of five or so cows that were lurking around our camp and we shoo'ed them away before dark (can't have them knocking over expensive telescopes, so we roped off the area where the scopes were setup). During the night I heard a bang and looked outside the camper to see it surrounded by cows
. I got my torch and astronomy laser out and scared them away. The next morning I noticed that my drivers door had been kicked in below the Cherokee band. Three distinct hoof marks on the lower panel where the cow kicked out at the Jeep.
The insurance company had a laugh about it when I called them. Turns out the cost to fix it was below my excess so I paid for it. The body shop guys pulled it out with suction, did abit of filling on the creases and resprayed and cleared the panel. It looks OK now but I can tell because they were a little sloppy with clear overspray.. Cost of repair $400.
So watch out for those cows
! All the outback driving I have done and never hit any critters and then I get mugged in my sleep by a cow
- and my dog slept through the whole episode.
