Default Fuel usage towing

We're looking at getting a 4 door wrangler,we've been doing a fair bit of research between the 3.6 petrol & 2.8 diesel, so far with maintenance & running costs we haven't found much difference. We have a pop top caravan & with our stuff in it, it weighs about 1500kgs, if anyone has or is towing with a 4 door wrangler, petrol or diesel some information on fuel usage for both would be a great help with our decision thank you.

I have towed a big heavy camping trailer while the car was fully loaded (4 fat blokes and heaps of gear) in my 3.6 rubi and it's the only time I would have preferred the diesel.
Towing is probably the only occasion where diesel wins.
Fuel extra wasn't too bad, maybe +3-4 l/100 but it just felt very underpowered, especially over 80km/h

Default Fuel usage towing

FWIW, I have a 2010 JKU CRD manual with 33" all terrains, bull bar, winch and 3 inch lift. Has GDE ECU flash/tune. Regularly returns 9.8 -10.2 lt/100km around outer suburbs of Melb. Recently towed an off-road camper of approx 1300kg loaded to Alice Springs and returned between 11.8 and 13.5 lt/100km at 100kph. Worst fuel was 15.3 on the Oodnadatta track with fairly low tyre pressures and a strong headwind. Second worst was 14.5 under similar conditions on the Mereenie Loop road. Fuel data measured, not dash readout figures.

We have both a JKU Diesel and a 3.6 Rubicon. The diesel towing 1500kg camper gets on average 16l per 100 and the 3.6 towing 800kg boat gets 18l per 100. Wind direction makes a huge difference too.
Both are auto.

You are right about the wind makes a big difference
With the jeep shaped like a block, it don't take to much wind at all.

My 2010 JKU towing a camper Trailer which is as high as the Jeeps roofline and often gets filled with firewood for home on the return trip would weigh in at least 1100kg returns 12.8s.
