i went on a trip a couple of weekends ago with a mix of cars including patrols, cruisers, land rovers, triton and a BT50. I was the only jeep and of course when i turned up i copped the usual ribbing from everyone about how they will have to recover me all day and push it home and all that. The first time i got their attention was when we were airing down and i got underneath to disconnect my swaybar, they all though i was already performing repairs but were soon pretty impressed by the system. the second time was on the fist hill climb where the a patrol on 33s and with a front locker got stuck and had to winch out and i drove right past him. i followed a patrol on 37s all day and kept up with him and im on 32s by the last track there was no more jeep jokes but then my transfer case decided not to go into 4 low so they started again but ah well its a jeep thing...

Jeep needs to do the same hard yards here that the others did before it is considered worthy.
(They also need to address their pathetic service and need to carry a reasonable stock of parts Australia wide so they can shake the unreliability claim that comes from near new cars being off the road for months due to 'no parts')

From what I've read, I don't remember Jeep abandoning Australia.
I do remember the offerings being over priced and under optioned for what the competitors had on offer. Jeep just couldn't compete in that market at the time. It was, from how I understand it, cost prohibitive, to import the vehicles as knock-downs and rebuild, as well as modify in a lot of instances.
Lack of success does not constitute "abandonment".
cheers

I do think that most of them just follow suit and hate on jeeps because it's the "cool" thing to do. None of my friends had really seen a jeep in action so that has changed their opinions (not the banter though) . I really think if more people gave them a chance, they wouldn't be so judgmental. I do think there needs to be more parts available in Australia though.

I think jeep stopped selling cars in Australia in 1985.

Buying a Jeep demonstrates the ability to think independently which is what a lot of people don't seem to like.
May be is like Windows vs Mac argument, everyone uses Windows so it must be good, unfortunately this isn't necessarily so. Unfortunately most 4wd owners seem to only listen to what magazines or their mates say, which is usually you can only do this in a Toyota or a Nissan. They also think they are more reliable, but I'm seriously doubtful this is actually the case.
It is a nice feeling though when people stop to watch me drive up a difficult section of track expecting the Jeep to fail. It is great when a near standard GC does a track easier than a kitted out Patrol or Cruiser, gets some interesting comments.

Yeah, I love it when the haters watch especially when the jeep is looking stock. Then it's just all quite and no comments when the jeep literally tip toes up the track.

My stock response to haters is "This Jeep goes to all the same places as your (Patrol, Landcruiser, etc.); it just cost you 5 times as much to get there!"
