Default TJ Engine Problems

G'day guys

I own a 97 TJ Wrangler. Just under 200k on the clock.

Went out 4wding recently and after getting stuck in a bog hole I have been having some engine problems.

1. The oil pressure gauge is playing up. I have no pressure at idle and it shows low pressure around 2k RPM

2. The engine is making a knocking noise which i know is not a good sign.

3. Quite a lot of smoke coming out the exhaust.

4. After taking the rocker cover off I also noticed some smoke coming up from where the push rods go down. Not sure if that's normal or not.

What I've done already is pull rocker cover and cleaned all push rods. None seemed bent or damaged.
Pulled the sump. No visible damage underneath. The oil was rather thick and slightly milky. There was some sediment/ dirt in the bottom of the pan.
Pulled oil pump and cleaned it out. Looks to be operating how it should be.

I am at a loss at what I should do next.

I had my local mechanic has a very brief look and listen and he recommended checking the valve stem seals.

Any other advice and input would be much appreciated!

It is my daily driver and it has been an absolute pain borrowing cars off people to get to work.

Cheers,
Paul

How deep was said booghole and how long were you stuck in it? I'd definitely be doing a compression test. Smoke and a knocking noise doesn't sound too good though.

Looks to be smoke.
Hard to differentiate.

Have not done a compression test yet.
Will try borrow a tester off a mate and do one.

Spark plugs were pretty black. Little bit of a flakes buildup

Boghole was just up to the bottom of the sills. Was stuck for about 20 minutes waiting for my mate to recover himself then me.

Oil pressure sensors are a common failure, I used a manual oil pressure gauge to test pressure when mine first went. Have replaced a few,

First thing I would be doing is actually checking that oil pressure is genuinely OK. Never trust the factory gauges. When you have said low oil pressure on the gauge is that when the knocking occurs or is the knock all the time? Deep sounding knock or more of a rattle?

Ok so I did a compression test with one of the push in style tester.

Results are

DRY.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
135 100. 120. 115. 110

Tea spoon of oil
1. 2. 3 4. 5. 6
155 145. 120. 125. 115

I couldn't test number 1 as I couldn't get the Damn plug out.
Any thoughts?

Also found while I had the engine running I took plugs off one by one. Number 5 had a loud knock while disconnected

Cheers.
Paul
