Do you know if they dropped the pan? If not this is a pretty bold claim.

Does seem quite a vague justification for something that is stuffed and needs big dollars spent. Also if that bad how come all forward gears are still working perfectly. Seems at odds with being totally stuffed.

I'd be wanting to know exactly what components are buggered. Second opinion could be worthwhile.

If they didn't drop the box out of the vehicle go somewhere else. Been down that path years ago, gave box a flush, refilled and the box that would die in weeks was good for another few years till I sold it. (not a Jeep a Borg Warner) The sole basis for the big repair/cost ($3500) was the amount of crap sitting in the bottom of the pan. If the box hasn't been serviced for bloody ages it will be gummed up and sometimes a good flush will sort it but if it hasn't been dropped then they don't know. Did it throw a code at all.

Did they say there was a heap of band/clutch or metal in the PAN?

Did they replace the filter and oil, if so did this help out at all?

Yeah they did say there was a heap of metal in there then they replaced the oil obviously so I could drive it home but no it didn't change a thing. Just a bit dissapointing because it's only got 140000k's on it but oh well s**t happens sometimes and I've found another one luckily so that's on it's way

this is what happens when the wrong trans fluid is used, i have seen them drop reverse before. sounds like the box is gone and you have a few options, 1 get a good used box and change it yourself i have done this job and its a pretty big job and you will need a good tool box (with heaps of extension bars) and a few trolley jacks and axle stands. i have heard people say you can't change them without getting them tuned back into the car but thats bullshit with the 6cyl box it goes in and works i believe the v8 trans could be different story. 2 get a second hand box and have it fitted by a mechanic or 3 get your box rebuilt. i personally wouldnt spend the money on getting the box fully rebuilt id go the good second hand unit.
just make sure you run the right oil in the box, they sell it at supercheap etc its nulon type 4 fluid, DON'T USE ANYTHING THAT IS A TYPE 3 AS IT WILL DESTROY THE BOX.
