Default Changing to 4wd Low

Hi

Just a question on changing to 4 low. I rarely use 4 low as mostly beach driving use part time however how do others change to 4 low. Do you change while moving? I tried this and got a meshing noise. What is the correct procedure

thanks

When changing into low range, your changing the gear ratios so whilst the vehicle is moving the teeth wont line up and will grind. You may also come into problems when stationary and may at times find it difficult to pop back in. As stated above the correct way is a very slow roll 3-5km as this is slow enough for the gears to slip over each other and transfer to the next ratio.

Very slow roll in neutral or in the previous gear?

I have always had the clutch in on a manual so I assume neutral in an auto would be the go.
I haven't used 4LO in my KJ yet so will give it a go next week and see what it says in the owners manual tonight.

As above, slow roll or stationary, neutral, gently pull the lever into 4lo. If it won't go in or grinds, don't force it, put it back into gear, move forward a little and try again. 4lo light should come on too.

Owners manual states....
With vehicle rolling at 3-5km/hr shift an automatic transmission to N.
While the vehicle is coasting 3-5km/hr , shift the transfer case lever firmly to the desired position. Do not pause in transfer case Neutral.
Hopefully this answers your question.
