Mileage os low.
The the chip is probably causing the extra smoke, more probable if it doesnt also modify the airflow, you may be getting hi egt's at times too. Lots on this and the lost tech forums. The ultimate is the Ecu tune and yes Ive done them all.
K&n probably insignificant with a turbo involved, especially if its working correctly and snorkel.
That,s it for now, do check out the tech sections for the crd, you probably wont need a salesman mechanic once u digest all of that.

Default KJ CRD Coolant Leak

Recently (last 6 months) been trying to find one of the infamous mystery coolant leaks on my KJ CRD, think this is the best spot for my post given the huge number of threads on mystery coolant leaks. Was in Sale, Vic with fairly normal temps and had a slow coolant leak, around 1 tank of coolant per 5-10K km.
Had it in three different mechanics, one said leaking from back of engine block so definitely a head gasket (despite compression test okay), another said leaking from front of engine but only a tiny amount, compression tested okay, the third said compression tested okay and couldnt find any leak at all.
Started a trip between Sale and Brisbane towing a 750kg trailer. Got most of the way before the problem got far worse (ended up losing 1 tank per 100km by the time I got to Grafton where a radiator specialist changed the pressure cap (they were close to the solution). Finally in brisbane took it to another radiator specialist and they found the leak by accidentally bumping the neck between the coolant surge tank and pressure cap whilst compression testing it.
The neck itself was losing pressure and therefore not providing adequate cooling and dumping coolant. Replaced the bottle and has held coolant for the past 3000km, (all of which were towing), now just got to fix the high temp problem, not particularly enjoying the jeep experience on the reliability side, but did like the 11.5l/100km towing on the highway.

A similar thing happened to me. Put in the brand new OEM thermostat and yeah for the first time since buying the jeep new, the temps stabilised perfectly, except I got a leak, drove me nuts for a while until I was fossicking around looking for it and bumped the top hose from the new thermostat and low and behold a slight leak out of the top of the metal itself, hmmmm so much for OEM parts. A bit of massaging with a screwdriver and a hammer to improve the seal that's supposed to be sonic welded and all good again.

Now, to mod the original one so I can use any thermostat core without changing out the whole darn part.

If u have guages, boost pressure. and egt then consider monitoring it and I can tell u that on mine it did benefit quite a bit from a very small tweak of the wastegate actuator. Leave this for later consideration though there are a few things that can be done but just look at doing the first couple of items, chances are u wont need much else.

Hey mate, ^ this. How did you tweak it?

I have a 2.5CRD with the external wastegate and a bleed valve sitting here in storage and was thinking of upping the boost slightly. How much did you increase it by? At the moment, mine reads 17psi from the turbo before it opens.

Only hard part was getting to it

Very Happy!!!

That's my old thread. The link above works fine except for the photos which are no longer hosted in the location originally used in the thread. If you can read you can work it out. I no longer host or post photos so they are not going to reappear.
