I'll be going steel on my next set purely because where I go there are a lot of rocks and with the offset I'll have more chance of keeping the rim in good nick, the stock alloys have severe rash on the spokes and they look like crap.

Another good point.
In one year of operation in relatively easy off road applications, mine were damaged so much I couldn't even give them away.
Rocks play hell with them.
My steel ones have been on for 4 years in some pretty extreme territory on a very regular basis and have hardly a mark on them.
It is because of the design and set putting the spokes out so close to the outer extremities, not because they are alloy.
Also, I am a little sceptical regarding 785.70/17s not rubbing on standard rims. Mine are on a 4.75" BS and they rub here and there during sharp turns and full articulation. Not enough to concern me though.

Exactly right Wazza, the way the spokes are just make them a target. As far as rubbing goes I don't get any and it appears to be different from Jeep to Jeep, luck of the drawer. What rims do you have out of curiosity?

Mine are 8x17 Pro Comp, series 98, Rock Crawlers with 4.75" bs.
I bought a set of six from 4X4 USA years ago.
That bs is supposed to keep the tyre tread inside the standard guards. Debatable? !
Anyhow, they have served me well.
The rubbing of tyres on certain rims issue is subject to the suspension set up.
