I'm not local but have explored the area when on work trips. You can head in any direction from town and find interesting places to explore. I'm especially interested in history and so far have found areas to the east to be good exploring, you can check out abandoned mine sites, the hydro station ruins, a funicular railway and much more I'm sure. The terrain and scenery is awesome around the gorges of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.

There's some awesome places not far from there. I am pretty keen to camp on the plateau at coonabrabran.
