If he can't get it sorted over the weekend (I don't have a spare starter got just about everything else) get him to drop into Autobarn Cairns on Monday morning we're on McCormack st (not our other store at Smithfield) and ask for Anthony and i'll see if I can find one around town for him.

I've dressed the contacts on solenoids before which often gets them going again.....

But none of ya's have ever heard of tapping on a bad starter solenoid to get the corroded/pitted/worn high amp contacts to pass current through?

Just to get you home? To your own garage.

This is an XJ, starters/solenoids are a dime a dozen. Cheaper to buy a new solenoid than rebuild one. But, yes, if you wanted to, that's a personal choice.

Geez Richard, that's a bloody long time to be a dud auto elec
Just trying to protect your trade. Fair enough, but I was waiting for you to say something like "No, don't just whack it, tap it gently with the handle end of a hammer, just in case you hit it too hard..."

It would have been nice if you had of explained in detail what goes wrong inside a solenoid, actually passing on some good tech. Too busy acting like a dick instead.

Yeah, like using you as an auto elec...great idea.
