Check the TRE's and panhard ends for play.

Did you make sure the damper isn't acting as a steering stop?
This would give it hell.

I'd think it would be unusual to have a steering damper fail completely.

Are you experiencing death wobble?

If so there could be a host of things wrong a new steering damper may temporarily mask. It may be a good idea to give us a bit more background on what has been happening.

A duff damper will NOT cause DW unless you have a problem elsewhere.....ie play in the TREs or ball joints etc. At the very best it might mask it for a while until the wear becomes too bad to hide. My mildly lifted CRD dented its damper on a rock to the point where it would not steer....so I drove without it for a month or so until the new one came! No DW because I have no worn out component's.....in fact I could hardly feel the difference apart from a bit more feedback in the form or bumpsteer when I hit something. You need to find out what is causing your DW rather than trying to hide it behind a stronger damper!
