Engine number is found on intake side of block, see attached picture. I jade to clean mine with some emery paper to be able to read it as it is not Stamped very deeply.

I am pretty sure that your engine number is part of your VIN, like the last six numbers for example. A bit easier than trying to get it off the block - assuming you have never changed engines.

However, if your thinking of trying to source an engine you need the engine part number not the engine serial number - which is what is stamped on the block.
Where are you located? Because in some states (like NSW) changing an engine requires a Blue Slip inspection at a RTA workshop.

You can get your engine rebuilt, the CRD engines are one fo the few these days that have full rebuild kits available. They have wet cylinder liners, so they can be changed, and pistons, conrods, valve assemblies including complete heads are available. You can source many of these parts from IDParts in the US, but they may not have 2.5 model parts as that was not sold in the US, you could try George at VM Specialist UK, he supplies parts to Australia and I know he can provide heads, timing belt kits, etc. Just do a search for him here on AJOR, there are plenty of threads with his contact details. I"d rebuild it if it was mine as it would be cheaper than a crate engine or a unknown wrecker 'special' but if you cna't do the work your self the hourly rate by a mechanic that knows the engine will get expensive quickly.
Good luck.
