Default Intermittent Engine

Not sure how to search for this fault on my 96 Jeep Cherokee sport but in last week as I was driving the car on the highway and it lost power and speedo dropped to 0

I started pull to the side of the road and put the transmission into neutral and restarted the engine and started accelerating again driving ok.

What would cause the sudden drop to zero on the speedo.

Also had a few shudders like it was trying to change gears come from the auto transmission while driving at a constant speed and revs.

Fuel pump was suggested but its not getting starved at high speed when I had to change my pump last time.

IIRC speedo runs on a electronic pulse from the speed sensor in the transfer case. it shares this pulse with the pcm and the trany controller. For it to drop to zero while sill rolling at speed, would suggest it has lost signal from the speed sensor. That you are having shift problems and engine issues would perhaps suggest that the pcm and the trany are also loosing signal albeit intermittently.

Mine had an issue where the gauge cluster was loose.
