Don't take this wrong, but i'd say 96 was right on the fringe of ECU integration with vehicles and a lot of the systems would be very basic protocol. Your tool may be "too new" to suit the vehicle

Certainly Key programming only started about then, basically when the Berlin Wall came down, and the Eastern Blockers liked the Beemers & Merc's so insurance companies forced them to install immobilizers.

The other reason Wally, may be the build month of your XJ. The ebay advert does say from 96 but if yours is pre June/July it may have a different system.

As we know mid year is the favorite time for manufactures to bring out "next years" model

if it is a CAN protocol , you have no chance of it connecting. look up on the autel and see what year it goes down to , I use a MD802 which will cover the USA market and ones before the year 2003 and after . I also have a cd reader which also should cover , I also have a cheap nasty chinese made which will only cover engine , and a CAN one which only covers models using CAN I have a AL519 which might cover a 96 , but I doubt it will read the TCM . it might I am not sure.
I will test it tomorrow on a 96 I have here getting the transfer case done .
will let you know and if it does , and you promise to mail back I will lend it to you.
