I'm with Rango. It's so much neater and easier to buy the correct pin socket for the head unit.
However if you do go down the solder route the method you suggest is correct.
Just try not to over heat the joint with a too hot solder iron. It should look shiny, if it's dull than the solder was too hot and it will be a high resistance joint and brittle.
Lay an old towel or something underneath where you are soldering if doing it in the car. Dropped solder will melt your interior.
