Tyre Carrier-to-Tailgate attachement

The latch on my tire carrier is just about gone, and rather than taking the whole bar off, getting someone to weld up another latch and then repainting, i thought it might be easier (and cooler) to have a jig that attaches it to my rear door, so that it opens when you open the tailgate.

Has anybody done this?

Would it be feasible?

Any idea how i'd even go about it?
