Default WK/2 Emergency Spares

Hi all,

So I'm planning a trip to Cape York July 2017 and will be getting the GC prepped for it - snorkel/lift/underbody etc but also concerned about whats needed in terms of emergency repairs.

I think I have the tools covered, but I noticed that Toyota and Nissan have 'packs' that can be purchased like this:
http://www.toughtoys.com.au/products/1173/ - belts/clamps/hoses etc.

Wondering if anyone has a list of, or knows of the common items that would be needed (or might fail) for a Petrol JGC (2011).

I have passable handyman ability but not specific knowledge on the GC. Even if I didn't have the ability or tools on hand to carry out minor repairs it would be handy to have what items might be needed so a passing good samaritan or nearest repair centre might be able to assist.

I'm guessing availability of perhaps even relatively common Jeep parts might be scarce in that neck of the woods. It would be a shame to have an epic trip cut short or interrupted for the sake of a minor part that I could be carrying along.

Thanks in advance.

Standard parts for big trips on all cars, I would get radiator hoses, spare oil, fuel and air filters, enough oil for an oil change and belts. A good idea is if your belts and hoses are getting on a bit, change them pre trip and keep the old ones as spares. You then are starting on a clean slate and you have also learnt how to do it before something bad happens so no need to panic or ruin your trip. It's a known thing you are confident you can handle. Change your oils before you go too is always a good idea in my opinion.

I just did Cape York earlier this month in a petrol JKU and took 40 litres of fuel which it turned out to just add weight and not be needed. A snorkel sock or 2 is a good idea because the dust is as bad as you've no doubt heard and a spare air filter can't hurt. And as CGdingo said I would get your belt changed and keep the old one and take a few radiator hoses. Otherwise I found the trip no different to a trip anywhere else. It was a great trip but wasn't anywhere near as tough as I thought it would be. As for tyres none of our 3 vehicles got a flat but we did have a puncture repair kit and all had relatively new tyre. The sidewalls did cop a caning too so make sure you have good quality tyres.

our 2012 WK2 CRD did lots of remote work in its life before being replaced with a 2015 - among other things, went twice to Cape York, as well as the Gibb River Rd and Plenty Hwy.
As others have posted, the Cape isn't terribly tough these days, (unless you play on the torn up sections of the OTT), but you will have to contend with corrugations and dust. Plenty of both.
Biggest issue will be contending with the boofs travelling at high speed in the opposite direction on the crown of the road!
Your tyres should be new or near new. I have an onboard air compressor as well as a puncture repair kit.
Apart from tools (all metric on the WK2) I carry a full swap of all filters (and the fuel filters on the diesel are a bugger to get to underneath), cable ties, wire, gaffer tape and various glues and sealant. All the hoses have always been in immaculate condition however if yours are a bit aged, change them before you go - don't wait until the side of the road.
An item you should source is spare fuses - the Micro 2 type is not easy to find. Get some and trial fit to make sure.
Enjoy the trip.
John

Thanks for the tips. Good common sense stuff.
