Allianz should be fine, I was with them for a number of years. They are one of the largest insurance companies in the world and I think you'll find most of the "enthusiast" insurance companies are actually underwritten by Allianz anyhow. Just be sure to be clear about what your modifications are and if they are willing to insure them don't be too concerned about being technically unroadworthy. If however they seem uneasy about your mods than by all means find a more accommodating provider.

If Allianz seem reluctant to come to the party then TCIS and Shannon's proport to be "Enthusiast" insurers. The other 4x4 forum I frequent has recently started recommending Club4x4. I have no idea how good they are but they claim to be "Insurance for 4x4 Enthusiasts". Note they have a clear and suprisingly sencible article on their website discussing the insurance of quote "illegal modifications" which is probably worth familuarising yourself with: http://www.club4x4.com.au/modification/

And finally, if you're interested, here is a thread I started back in 2012 where I was trying to get my head around what was legal: Lift, Tyres and Insurance

All the best and happy wheeling

You are correct. I forgot, itsa JK, max stock 32". Therefore 33" = 1/2" giving a total = 4".

50mm thing is an actual rule.

See Section 5 ( CERTIFIED MODS AND LS CODES). LS7 n LS8 of the. NATIONAL CODES OF PRACTICE

Buying an uninsured, unregistered, unengineered vehicle is legal. The onus is on the buyer to do their due diligence and checks especially buying privately, not from a corporation as such. You can bank it in as a learning experience I guess.

It's the same in the USA too. If you're from UT and buy a heavily modded, lifted Jeep from CA, it wouldn't be legal in UT. Private transactions are usual "as is" basis. Same thing when you buy a "find of the century" that does not pass smog.

Once certified and insured, its cheaper than being sued for at fault driver in case of a major accident.

You shouldn't be surprised really as we tend to copy the litigious trends that happen in 'merica. Insurance goes up and legislation tightens up because everybody is suing everybody and everything...Having said that, I love the USA and go back there a lot. Love both AUS n USA. Families in LA,IL,AZ,NY,TX..... scattered world over.

My recommendation is to contact Club4x4 for insurance after its engineered. They are fantastic people to deal with and cover a lot more than most companies will especially offroad and towing.

Haha, yes, a learning experience indeed! Originally from South Carolina, where you could technically have a lifted Ute or Jeep as high as the sky. So it didn't even compute that I should have checked the legality of height. I figure my own naivety got the best of me, that I should have done better research and with expectation previous owner to inform of anything "illegal." Going to check with rego office first just to be sure previous owner didn't already get engineered. Then if not, to start the process of getting Jeep "engineered" to be roadworthy. Will update this thread if all goes well and passes. Thanks everyone for your help and guidance!

What qualifies as a test track? Or do you have an airstrip or something?

Sorry for the confusion, it's the dude's (engineer's) test track not mine.

What qualifies as one? Dunno.

Straight, long, wide, safe, smooth enough to get the vehicle up to 120 kmh, I suppose. Like a runway or a speedway, race track?? Or possibly get a dispensation from the council or LAC on a quiet country road?

I honestly do not know.
