Default Dana 30 arb locker banging

Hi everyone,

I have a 08 jku crd manual

My front diff is a dana 30 with an arb air locker. When in 4wd it's making a loud click/banging coming from the front end especially when turning. I've checked front uni joints and steering components and there all fine. I noticed that when parked up I can turn the front tailshaft shaft by hand about a quater of a turn before it locks, which I've simulated in the video. The ring and pinion backlash seem fine but the spider or side gears turn a bit before they lock up.

Is there meant to be that much free play in the tail shaft? I can hardly move my buddy's jeeps front shaft. And is the banging most likely from the diff?

https://youtu.be/6ZYl9gAIo5g

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

Does it only happen in one alignment of the spider gears or is the same all the way around?

I chipped a tooth on mine many diffs ago, and it was a little similar in behaviour until the tooth part ended up in the crown wheel/pinion and a big bang occurred.

When you drained the oil, did you get any bits out?

Greg

Thanks for the reply I'm going to open up again and inspect further today, may even pull the centre out. The oil had some light fragments of shavings but nothing major.

Update:

Pulled diff apart today and removed centre, the spider gears are fine and all other internals are fine. Can't work out where the banging/clicking sound is coming from its almost a tinny sound. Happens mostly when the wheels are turned in 4low
Could it possibly be the front drive shaft cv?

Cheers
