Question Rear Brake Assist

After a recent U Connect upgrade the dealer ticked Rear Brake assist. The result was that backing down our driveway, a slight touch of the brake pedal caused a noisy shuddering stop and scared the hell out of the passengers. I have unticked it and the brakes work normally. What are owners thoughts on using this brake assist on normal operation, on trips etc?.

As far as I am aware the brake assist is only used to stop you before you back into something. If I back out the driveway to fast it sees the 1/2in drop as a chasm and slams on the brakes. If I back out slowly all is good.

Love brake assist (it saved our cat). As Dave has already pointed out, it stops you hitting something when reversing.

From the manual -
The automatic braking function is intended to assist the
driver in avoiding possible collisions with detected obstacles
when backing up in REVERSE gear.

I'm a bit confused as to your reference that you touched the brake pedal and it came to a 'shuddering halt'. I suspect that it detected an obstacle first and activated at the same time that you decided to hit the brake. I think the system was faster than you.

I wouldn't call it 'shuddering' exactly and I wouldn't call it 'aggressive' but it most certainly is 'assertive' in its action.

I like it.

I have a steep long driveway, and need to slow down when backing, with the brake assist on the car comes to a shuddering stop, no problem since I switched it off.

Well the things you unknowingly have that pop out of the woodwork, somehow or other the automatic park brake thing got switched off (good) but the downside is a reminder notice that pops up on the screen. Sigh, driving a car used to be so simple.

Same issue here when reversing... my folks driveway hits the street at a moderate angle and the rear brake assist slams on the brakes because it perceives the road as an obstacle. A few other similar situations the same thing happens. I keep it turned off - I figure if I hit something with mirrors, parking sensors and a reversing camera, I should turn in my licence!

The forward collision warning, I have the alert switched on to screech at me, but I have the automatic braking deactivated. I've had a number of false alarms (i.e. A vehicle slowing to turn left when I'm continuing straight on - if I don't brake the Jeep will screech the alarm at me). In that situation I don't need it l deciding to impose emergency braking with a fully loaded b-double sitting in my rear-view mirror. Yes, the automated systems can react faster than a human, but they don't have the same situational "awareness"...
