Default Front prop shaft

Hi Gents.
a few questions about a 2008 MY CRD limited with Quadrtrack 11.
Should this vehicle drive with the front prop shaft removed. Mine does not. Mine limits engine revs to about 1200 with no drive regardless of throttle position. Vehicle drives in low range. Had the prop shaft strip the spline at the gearbox end. Big bang and lots of under floor noise. Has anyone bought a Crown prop shaft are they OK. Has anyone had a new spline welded to a prop shaft.

With the front (or rear) prop shaft removed you won't have any drive as the transfer case is like an open differential and sends the power to the path of least resistance.
In low range the transfer case locks giving 50/50 split of power to the front and rear differentials giving you drive again.

If it is just the C/V (transfer case end) then a CV-861 will fix it, Falcon XR8 ute ones fit.

But if it is as you said a striped spline then a replacement will be required.
There are several different lengths available depending on which engine you have (transfer case sits in different position depending on the engine/transmission combo) so if ordering off the web make sure it fits your engine type.
A custom one made is the ultimate answer. Tom Woods (in the USA) make one
http://www.4xshaft.com/ (look under WK) using uni-joints.

I had one made here (like fig 4 on Tom's site) in Australia for $1k but as luck would have it they didn't balance it right so I'm back to an original till I sort it out.

These guys http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/272401694...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT list a CV for the Grand but also say they make custom shafts. May be worth talking to.

I just noticed you are in QLD, Valpacer is selling off his WH stuff and if I recall right he had a custom shaft for sale. He may still have it so PM him.

Also, these C/V's seam to fail when the front diff bush's wear out, it changes the angle of the prop shaft. If you haven't changed the front bush's lately I would be checking them out.

I think the front diff bushes should be checked on a regular basis, if they are caught early before they fail, the drive train should be trouble free.

I kept a set of bushes in the car, just in case they started failing while travelling. I would hate to see a split front mount, half way across the Nullabor, towing a 2 ton van.

Now i would probably fit the Jeeperf bushes, to be on the safe side. Just my opinion.

Failure happened halfway between Byron Bay and Tweed Heads. Limped into TH at 60 k. So its 200 k from home. Too far to keep driving with about 2 to on the back. Got the quote last night still crying $2070. Not much you can do when its so far from home.

Default tailshaft woes

OUCH on both counts
Dunno if it helps but have you tried the Jeep wreckers at Hervey Bay?
May save you a few $$
Hope it all works out
Cheers
